Franklin Half Dollars – A Tribute to American Ingenuity

First issued in 1948 and minted through 1963, the Franklin Half Dollar stands as a remarkable blend of artistry, history, and American pride. The idea to honor Benjamin Franklin—Founding Father, statesman, inventor, author, and one of the most prolific thinkers in U.S. history—was championed by U.S. Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross, who believed Franklin’s legacy deserved a place in the nation’s coinage.

Ross commissioned Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock to design the coin, and he had already begun initial sketches prior to the official request. Although Sinnock passed away before the design was completed, his work laid the foundation for what would become one of the most distinctive half dollars in American history.

Gilroy Roberts, the newly appointed Chief Engraver, took over the project and completed the design—adding features required by law, including an eagle, as mandated by the Coinage Act of 1873. His interpretation featured a modestly sized eagle paired with the iconic Liberty Bell, complete with its historic crack.

When the design was submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts, it was met with criticism: the crack in the bell, they argued, invited mockery, and the eagle was too small. Despite this, the U.S. Mint and Treasury Department moved forward, recognizing the unique artistic value of the Sinnock–Roberts collaboration.

Today, Franklin Half Dollars are celebrated for their bold, unconventional design and their connection to one of America’s greatest minds. For collectors, investors, and history enthusiasts alike, they offer a beautiful and meaningful link to the nation’s heritage.
